Swedish House Mafia!

Hej, hej! (Thats Swedish for HELLO!) How are you all? So the last week has been pretty hectic - but in a good way! It was all about the Swedish House Mafia (SHM AKA: Steve Angello, Sebastien Ingrosso and Axwell) last weekend at Brixton were amazing! Just caught the end of Kissy Sell Out, who was supporting SHM - he truly has mastered the warm-up DJ skills, as well as being a mint headliner. So after we fought off the near 100m cloakroom queue, it was straight into the main room (they had segregated some parts - hallways etc. of the academy off to create different rooms/areas) and within a minute of being in there the screens lit up for the Swede's intro. As predictable as it may have been they ran onto the stage and went straight into 'Leave The World Behind' setting a pretty good theme for the rest of the night. Airhorn's were in high supplies as the trio must have gone through about 3 per song - especially Angello who at one point could be seen using 6 of them! They put on a wicked show, the pyrotechnics, CO2 Cannons, flame throwers and lasers were out in true force! The only downside was the venue, it seemed too much like a gig in there (it's a brilliant venue for gigs nonetheless) and it was like more of a mosh pit at the front, rather than somewhere you could dance. Ministry of Sound or a super club would have probably been a better choice. This was all soon forgotten thanks to the music, tracks like 'Guns on Demo (GOD)' from Laidback Luke got the crowd stomping along with some of SHM's finest new and classic material. So to give you a taste of one of 2009's most prominent dance music shows, I pulled together a Swedish House Mafia special for everyone who was or wasn't there!

Gigs and Stuff - October 2009

October's been pretty sweet for me gig-wise! Pacha London was awesome on 16th October playing alongside the likes of Bodyrox and Marcella Woods. I twisted up the Global room from 3-4am then I hit the main room for the last stint until 5am. Everyone was loving the wonky stuff, so expect some more of that in the future from me! And of course with being back at Uni all the students have their loans in and there are plenty of mint events to be playing at. I have played for the Student Radio Awards Nominations party and a brand new 'I Love Student Radio' event where even Greg James turned up!

So it's the University of Westminster Freshers Ball @ Pacha, London tomorrow (Friday 16th October 2009) and guess what?! Yup! I'm playing! So what kind of tunes can you expect to hear - well without giving too much of my set away... Deadmau5 @ The Roundhou5e!

Hello! Hope you all are good! 5o I went down to 5ee the Mau5 5ma5h up The Roundhou5e la5t night - and ye5 he well and truly killed it. Joel played a con5iderably long 5et, which kept the crowd bouncing for over two hour5. CO2 cannon5 were in full 5trength (well not quite a5 mental a5 the cannon5 in Ibiza, but the novelty wa5 5till there!) and 5o wa5 the mu5ic. A5 he ran on 5tage from hi5 OTT vi5ual intro, hi5 5igniture Mau5 hat 5hadow wa5 projected onto the roof of the Roundhou5e a5 the light5 5hone from behind him. He 5tarted with about 30min5 of new material, which in true Deadmau5 5tyle wa5 fanta5tically melodic. He gradually built into track5 from the new album kicking off with 'FML'. He continued as he meant to go on with track5 like 'Sometimes Things Get Complicated' fu5ed with hi5 mix of Calvin Harris's 'I'm Not Alone'. Tracks like 'You Need A Ladder' (the Zelda theme tune) and 'Ghosts and Stuff' got the Mau5 dancing like the inner geek, flapping hi5 arm5 in the air and jumping on the table and embracing the vi5ual5 of 'Space Invaders'. Another 5lightly worrying factor about the Canadian'5 5et wa5 the amount5 of confetti cannon5 - it 5eems he mu5t have been either to a lot of wedding5 recently, or perhaps this is the Mau5 5howing off hi5 feminine 5ide with 5ilver, red and white 5treamer5 erupting every time an epic breakdown kicked back in with hi5 5igniture thumping ba55.

5treamers and odd dancing a5ide, Zimmerman wa5 truely on form la5t night and if anything was to take away it would be the final track. I don't think thi5 video need5 any description but it's what Deadmau5 fini5hed with and it wa5 BRILLIANT!

How cool i5 that! Keep your eye5 peeled for ticket5 at your local venue - he i5 gigging for the next week or 5o - go and 5ee! If not I'm 5ure you will be able to catch a load of it on YouTube!

Bonkers Conkers!

Street Fair!

That was last year - check me out rocking Deadmau5 to innocent villagers, quite embarrassing really - it's all in community spirit though! Hopefully next summer I will smashing it at both the Riverside (not in anyway shape or form to do with Sidney Sampson) and The Cornbury Festival 'rave' tent!

So, it's Charlbury Street Fair this Saturday (19th September 2009) and yours truly is gunna be rocking the decks! Sunny September!

Hey Hey! How are you all doing? So it was Notting Hill Carnival last weekend, the place was truely buzzing, the weather was wicked and the music was pumping! Cr2 Records hosted their own soundsystem and one heck of one it was! Headlining was DJ Chuckie - a fresh DJ straight out of Amsterdam - he brang his dirty/edgy/urban-house to the scene and truely killed it. However, the random back street was not graced by Micky Slim - who was meant to be closing the show off for Cr2. I was a bit gutted as I was looking forward to one of his insanse sets - the stewards claimed there were a few complications - but Micky we hope you get better soon! Chuckie hung around and stepped in for Micky - smashing it with a huge D'n'B set - so I have graced this mix with one of his biggest tunes yet! It was indeed a massive weekend for dance music with Creamfields and Reading and Leeds (Yes they do have a dance stage there - Deadmau5 headlined this year!) So to get into the musical spirit I have slammed together another mix for you lovely people.

The Dance Show's Out For Summer!

Hey guys! Hope your all doing well! Just back from Glastonbury! Man! It was amazing this year - nice mixture of mud, sun and rain (if thats possible!) Highlight has to be The Prodigy - they were incredible - check them out here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/glastonbury/2009/artists/prodigy/index.shtml

Anyway!

So my last show this year (well until September) for Smoke Radio and we waved goodbye to an awesome year of dance music on the show. It gets bigger and better every week and over the summer I'm sure we will have some anthems from the likes of Ibiza. Don't worry though! I will be keeping your ears satisfied with all this summers bangers in some of my special summer mixes.

I'm busy with the likes of work experience at certain radio compaines at the moment, but soon as I can get my hands on those decks I will and the fisrt installment of my summer mixes will be coming to you!

Absolutely massive!

Deadmau5 In The Hou5e

Deadmau5 tore it up last week at the Electric Ballroom in Camden. He got a bit merry on stage - particular highlights of this include the Mau5 wobbling around on stage, falling over a speaker, smoking under the decks and trying to drink through his iconic headwear. Maybe all this got a bit too much for him as he pushed the system to the limit - after heavily using a filter over one of his last tracks - resulting in the system cutting out. However, he recovered after a minute of silence as he frantically tapped away on his laptop. The crowd wasn't fazed as they chanted his name until he recovered. He pulled it out the bag with his remix of: The Longest Road - Morgan Page feat. Lissie. Singing along into a Corona bottle Joel really looked like he was quite the karaoke don.


So in the run up to the show I thought - why not do a Deadmau5 themed show?

5 Minutes of Fame!

Ok, so I went out with my mates recently to a comedy night at a bar called 'The Pheonix' in Oxford Circus. The night - 'Old Rope' - is for comedians to try out their new material. Stephen Merchant was the headliner - he was quality, pulling out a Bafta and a Golden Globe! Then towards the end of his set, he asks for two volunteers to perform a play he wrote when he was 14 called choices - he needed a man and a woman to act for him. Great. Suddenly all my mates there - Spike, Rich, Fiz and my girlfriend, Jen, decide it's a great idea to start pointing at me and Jen to get up there - being in the second row, Merchant points at us to get up there! Fantastic, so up we got and this is what happened...



So what so you think? Was a good laugh in hindsight!

Looks like next week's show is going to be Deadmau5 themed as he is touring the UK at the moment - going to see him on Wednesday at the Electric Ballroom in Camden - should be mint.

Dance Anthems of 2009 So Far...

Every so often Smoke Radio (the radio station my show goes out on) does a sort of novelty broadcast, for instance the first show of 2009 resulted in my 2008 Dance Anthems Mix (see later posts for more info). Anyway, it came to the time of year where Smoke Radio do the 24 hour broadcast - a day where the stations output is all live and the specialist and daytime programmes are all mixed up. However, this year Smoke Radio decided it would be better to do a 26 hour broadcast (bit weird I think) and I got the lovely slot of 6am - Nice.

The Dance Show

Ok so this is what its all about with me on the radio...

I present the Dance Show on Smoke Radio, so listen in for all the latest in dance music from electo-house to techno, covering the whole dance music globe.

I am in the mix for an hour long session, with features such as:

Well allow me to introduce myself, I am Sam. As it all pretty much says in the 'About Me' bit, I'm a Electro-House DJ, and I am currently studying Radio Production at the University of Westminster. I produce and present a specialist dance music radio show - it broadcasts live every Tuesday from 8-9pm on the university's student radio station 'Smoke Radio': www.smokeradio.co.uk
